St. Louis-Style Pizza

If we measured pizza on a spectrum, Chicago deep-dish pizza would sit on one end, and St. Louis-style pizza would sit on the other. All other types of pizza would fall somewhere in between. St. Louis-style pizza is the antithesis to deep-dish pizza in every way, and you’ll understand why when you see it. It has a thin, cracker-like crust that’s cut into squares (known as tavern-style) rather than into wedges, which makes the slices easier to hold and supports the weight of the heavy toppings. But its most defining (and controversial) characteristic is the Provel cheese: a nutty, funky mixture of cheddar, Swiss and provolone that melts easily without being stringy.

St. Louis-style pizza is the easiest pizza to make at home, even when every part is made from scratch (like in our recipe). We’ll let you in on all the secrets to making the most authentic pie possible, including a Provel substitute if you can’t get your hands on it.

You’ve Been Opening Jars Wrong Your Whole Life, According to TikTok

Conquering stuck jar lids ranks right up there with cleaning out the dishwasher filter as one of our most despised kitchen tasks. There’s something about a fragile glass jar and a lodged-on lid that immediately adds an extra layer of stress. This is not to mention the fact that the time we spend fighting with an overly stubborn lid could be much better spent making dinner or dessert.

Whether you’re one of the 54 million adults in the U.S. with arthritis or simply ended up with a jar with a locked-on lid, it’s a frustrating predicament. For this reason, there are countless products ranging from under-cabinet openers and pricey electronic models to knife-knocking strategies and the viral hack of squeezing the lid between your hands. (By the way, we tried the latter method and weren’t able to get this to work.)

We’re convinced that there has to be a better way than shelling out $60 for a new appliance or struggling to make that squeezing strategy work. Turns out, there is. And you most likely already have what you need in a kitchen drawer right now.

Alfredo Baked Spaghetti

Baked pastas are among my family’s favorite dinners. Homemade lasagna has earned the title of “Most Requested Birthday Dinner,” but since it is a labor of love to prepare, I reserve it for special occasions. But just because I won’t layer noodles and sauce on a weeknight doesn’t mean that pasta casseroles aren’t on the menu.

When requests for lasagna start rolling in, I turn to recipes like baked spaghetti for inspiration. It has all of the essential elements of a family-friendly dinner, from the quick-cooking sauce to the tangle of spaghetti and cheesy finish. In this version of baked spaghetti, I’m tossing the pasta with another beloved Italian-American sauce, alfredo sauce. Alfredo baked spaghetti comes together with just 15 minutes of prep and tastes extra-creamy, cheesy, and delicious.

Ingredients for Potato Sausage Casserole

Ingredients for potato sausage casserole on kitchen counter.
Leticia Almeida for Taste of Home
  • Pork sausage: Pork sausage provides savory flavors for the casserole, complementing the creamy sauce and hearty potatoes.
  • Cream of mushroom soup: Undiluted, condensed soup adds creaminess, binding the ingredients together while enhancing the overall richness. If you want to avoid dairy, use a canned creamy mushroom soup made with non-dairy milk, or a homemade mushroom gravy for a fresher alternative.
  • Milk: Milk adds richness to the sauce mixture, ensuring a creamy consistency. This recipe calls for 2% milk, but you can substitute almond or oat milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Chopped onion: Provides aromatic sweetness and texture to the layers of the casserole. Shallots or leeks can be used as alternatives for a milder onion flavor.
  • Potatoes: Peeled and sliced potatoes serve as the hearty base of the casserole, cooking to tender during baking. Substitute with sweet potatoes for a twist on the classic dish, adding a hint of sweetness.
  • Cheddar cheese: Shredded cheddar melts into a golden, gooey topping for the casserole. For a milder flavor, use Monterey Jack cheese, or vegan cheese for a dairy-free alternative.
  • Parsley (optional): Minced parsley offers a fresh garnish with visual appeal.
