Corn Dog Casserole

A fun twist on the iconic state fair corn dog, this easy corn dog casserole is in and out of the oven in 30 minutes. Best of all, there’s no waiting in line.

A corn dog casserole is a homey way to mimic the flavor of that favorite fair food on a stick, without the fuss. The key ingredients are the same: hot dogs and a cornbread batter. Our corn dog casserole recipe includes a few more ingredients and skips the deep frying (and the stick) to create a family-friendly fare for casual mealtimes. Pair it with a side of roasted carrots and pop them in the oven at the same time.

This dish is also quick to disappear at potlucks. It’s hard to resist the cheesy, fluffy cornbread chunks of juicy hotdogs. Although we love the traditional flavor of all-beef hot dogs, feel free to use your favorite frank or sausage.

Corn Dog Casserole ingredients: Hot Dog, Milk, Cheese, Green Onion, Eggs, Pepper, Butter
Nicole Perry for Taste of Home
  • Butter: It does indeed make everything better. This recipe calls for it to be melted to saute the vegetables, adding a rich flavor.
  • Celery and green onions: The combination, gently cooked in butter until tender, adds a foundation of earthy flavor.
  • Hot dogs: For the best corn dog flavor, go for a high-quality beef hot dog.
  • Eggs: Not only do eggs help the batter rise, but they provide structure to keep the baked cornbread from crumbling to pieces.
  • Milk: The liquid adds moisture to create a thick and fluffy batter. We like 2% milk in this recipe, but nut milk works well, too.
  • Seasonings: Sage and pepper add boosts of savory flavors.
  • Cornbread/muffin mix: A corn dog casserole doesn’t taste the same without it! Cornbread/muffin mix is typically made with yellow cornmeal and is an easy-prep base for the batter.
  • Shredded sharp cheddar cheese: If you have a few extra minutes, grate your cheese. Packaged shredded cheese typically contains preservatives that make it a bit more difficult to melt.

Tuna Broccoli Casserole

This tuna broccoli casserole captures all the goodness of the classic recipe without using condensed soup. It gets straight to the good stuff: tender noodles, a creamy homemade sauce with real depth, and a generous handful of melty cheese. Onion and dried herbs simmer into the sauce, giving it a savory backbone and making it feel more like a pantry-friendly bechamel than a shortcut sauce. The broccoli stays bright and slightly crisp, the tuna adds heft without overwhelming the dish, and the panko topping turns golden and toasty thanks to a slick of melted butter.

What comes out of the oven is equal parts comfort and competence, with bubbling edges, a cheesy crust and a spoonable center that’s just firm enough to hold its shape. It’s a great use of shelf-stable staples and frozen veggies, but it eats like a casserole with a lot more effort behind it. You’ll get creamy, chewy, crunchy and savory in every bite—no processed shortcuts, no extra fuss.

Hamburger Potato Casserole

This hamburger potato casserole recipe creates a potato crust with layers of seasoned ground beef and corn underneath a melty topping of cheese, offering a delicious twist on cottage pie. I have fond memories of classic cottage pie, a dish I’d never seen or heard of until I moved from New York City to rural Vermont. There, in the cafeteria at our tiny elementary school, I had my first taste of the savory pie alongside freshly made maple baked beans.

Unlike a classic cottage pie recipe, this hamburger and potato casserole features the layers in reverse. A crust of thinly sliced potatoes is topped with ground beef, corn, and a creamy combination of creamy celery soup, milk and cheddar. The resulting hamburger casserole with potatoes is fantastic for cozy cool-weather dinners, potluck parties and small, casual gatherings.

Ingredients for Hamburger Potato Casserole

  • Potatoes: Starchy russet potatoes are the best type of potato for a dish with a crispy ‘tater crust. Creamy all-purpose Yukon Gold potatoes also crisp up nicely. Waxy red-skinned potatoes wouldn’t be a first choice but can be used in a pinch.
  • Butter: Salted or unsalted butter works for this hamburger casserole with potatoes recipe.
  • Seasonings: Our hamburger and potato casserole recipe keeps seasonings simple with salt, black pepper and garlic powder. Check our recipe variations for ideas about how to spice up the recipe.
  • Ground beef: You can use any type of ground beef, such as lean ground sirloin or ground chuck. If you have access to freshly ground beef from a butcher’s shop or a farmers market, that will likely be the most flavorful option.
  • Frozen corn: Frozen corn preserves the deliciously sweet taste of corn year-round. However, if fresh corn happens to be in season when you make hamburger potato casserole, cut the kernels off the cob and throw them in.
  • Cream of celery soup: A casserole classic, cream of celery soup adds richness to hamburger casserole with potatoes. Not into celery? Swap in the creamy condensed soup of your choice.
  • Milk: The hamburger and potato casserole recipe calls for 2% milk, but you can use any milk you have on hand.
  • Chopped onion: We typically use white or yellow onions for this dish, but red onions are a great option to add a pop of color.
  • Cheddar cheese: Zingy cheddar cheese perks up the flavor of hamburger casserole with potatoes. If you enjoy bold cheese, don’t be afraid to go with extra-sharp cheddar.
  • Parsley: A smattering of minced parsley adds a bit of color and fresh flavor. Feel free to omit it if you don’t have any kicking around.

Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

Nothing says comfort food like a casserole—and this Philly cheesesteak casserole recipe is definitely comfort food. With macaroni, ground beef, peppers, onions, a provolone cheese topping and a creamy sauce that holds everything together, this recipe has all the great flavors of a Philly cheesesteak transformed into one hearty make-ahead meal. Prep the bake for busy evenings when you don’t have time to linger in the kitchen, or share it with a friend who needs some home-cooked comfort food.

Philly Cheesesteak Casserole Ingredients

  • Macaroni: Elbow macaroni is the perfect pasta shape to sop up the sauce in this dish. The sauce will coat the outside and the inside of the noodles so each bite is as creamy as possible.
  • Ground beef: Use your personal preference of ground beef for this Philly steak casserole, whether it’s 70, 80 or 90% lean.
  • Peppers: Red and green peppers are the classic veggies in a cheesesteak, so we had to include them in this inspired recipe.
  • Onion: Onions are essential for this cheesesteak-inspired casserole as well, pairing perfectly with the bell peppers.
  • Butter: Although it’s not necessary to put fat in the pan to brown beef, butter gives the meat crumbles, peppers and onions some extra flavor.
  • Beef broth: A can of beef broth helps create a deep and rich flavor in the sauce. When you’re at the store, make sure you understand the difference between stock and broth to help decide which can to bring home.
  • Cream cheese: This recipe for Philly cheesesteak casserole calls for cream cheese to make the sauce extra creamy, tangy and rich.
  • Heavy whipping cream: Heavy whipping cream adds another creamy element to the sauce.
  • Garlic: Don’t skimp on fresh garlic here. Use your favorite method for mincing garlic to get the job done.
  • Seasonings: Use Italian seasoning, salt and pepper for some added flavor.
  • Provolone cheese: Slices of provolone are melted on top to create a cheesy casserole that everyone will love.

Slow-Cooker Ranch Chicken

If you’ve got a slow cooker, we’ve got a recipe you have to try! This slow-cooker ranch chicken is a comforting meal that cooks in a single pot, minimizing the number of dishes for cleanup. Creamy, flavorful and warming, it’s one of those easy chicken dinners that’s perfect for busy weeknights.

In this recipe, chicken breasts are cooked slowly until they become tender and shreddable. Cream cheese and a can of condensed cream of chicken soup are added to give the chicken a rich, creamy consistency, and the dish is served over rice or noodles. It’s a wonderful set-it-and-forget-it meal, and it’ll make you want to keep more slow-cooker chicken breast recipes within reach!

Slow-Cooker Ranch Chicken Ingredients

  • Chicken broth: Use store-bought chicken broth for the quickest preparation. If you prefer to make chicken broth from scratch, it will elevate all the flavors.
  • Ranch salad dressing mix: You can find packets of this popular seasoning mix at the grocery store, or make your own ranch dressing and dip mix.
  • Chicken breasts: We call for boneless skinless chicken breasts, but you can substitute boneless chicken thighs if you prefer dark meat.
  • Cream of chicken soup: Condensed soup is a miracle worker for casseroles and sauces. It acts as a roux (a thickening agent) to give the sauce a thick, creamy consistency. Use store-bought condensed soup or a homemade substitute for cream of chicken soup.
  • Cream cheese: Cream cheese melts into the sauce, giving the chicken a slightly sweet flavor and an incredible texture.
  • Noodles or rice: You can serve this creamy chicken over noodles or rice; they’re both delicious. If you choose noodles, consider thick egg noodles, which will give the sauce something to stick to.
  • Optional toppings: Add a cheesy finish with shredded cheddar cheese, or boost the savory vibes with crumbled cooked bacon and chopped green onions.
