Labor Day is the perfect long weekend to squeeze in all the best aspects of summer before it comes to a close: spending time outside, playing outdoor games and going to every barbecue you’re invited to. When it comes to the latter, never show up empty-handed. The hosts usually take care of the main grilling recipes, so help them fill out the spread with one or two Labor Day side dishes.
Labor Day recipes should be summery, easy and full of flavor. These fruit or vegetable side dishes are loaded with summer produce like heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn, fresh cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini and vibrant beans. They are then bulked up with mayo-based sauces, tangy vinaigrettes, pastas, cheese and rice.
Before deciding on which side to make, check in with the host to ask about any dietary restrictions. There are tons of options for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone with a gluten or dairy allergy! Pro tip: I like to make these dishes the day before. That way, they have time to sit in the fridge, chill thoroughly and let the flavors meld together while I get extra time on party day to get ready.
