Make-Ahead Camping Tip:

Assemble the foil packets at home and store them in a cooler until you’re ready to cook. This saves prep time at the campsite and makes dinner as simple as placing the packets on the campfire grate or grill.
There are actually three ways campers could approach it:
Option 1: Prep Everything at Home
  • Slice potatoes and onions.
  • Assemble the packets completely.
  • Store in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Transport in a cooler.
This is ideal for campers arriving late on Friday evening.
Option 2: Prep Vegetables at Home
  • Slice potatoes and onions ahead of time.
  • Store in zip-top bags or containers.
  • Assemble packets at the campsite.
This gives a little more flexibility while still reducing campsite prep.
Option 3: Freezer Meal Version
  • Assemble packets completely.
  • Freeze flat.
  • Place frozen packets in the cooler.
  • They help keep the cooler cold while thawing.
