16 Diabetes-Friendly Breakfast Recipes

The right breakfast supports healthy blood sugar and steady energy all day long. Our best diabetic breakfast ideas include sweet and savory options like pancakes, hearty oatmeals and classic egg recipes.

As a dietitian, I’ve found that diabetes-friendly breakfasts are a great start for anyone who needs help managing their blood sugars. That first meal can have a big impact on your energy, mood and blood sugar levels throughout the day. But typical breakfast foods like sugary cereals, pastries and white toast are often high in refined carbs and low in the nutrients that support steady blood sugar. Instead, I recommend high-protein breakfasts with complex, slow-digesting carbs, healthy fats and foods that reduce blood sugar to keep you full and focused.

The good news is that diabetes-friendly breakfasts can still be fun and flavorful—it’s definitely not typical “diet” food. We’re talking about flavorful diabetes-friendly oatmeal recipes paired with lean breakfast sausage, or a vibrant veggie frittata with sliced avocado and fresh fruit. There are even high protein and fiber-rich versions of favorites like waffles, quick breads and pancake recipes.

We gathered our best breakfasts for people with diabetes. These sweet and savory options all contain 30 grams or less of carbohydrates and are designed to fuel you with the nutrients you need without causing a spike in blood sugar. You’ll find a mix of quick recipes, make-ahead breakfasts and recipes that you can mix and match to create a satisfying, balanced breakfast that supports your blood sugar goals.

Carrot Cake Pancakes

Enjoying a glorious stacked carrot cake typically means cake layers and cream cheese frosting, but carrot cake pancakes invite the flavors of this beloved dessert to the breakfast table. We start with a pancake mix to keep this recipe for carrot cake pancakes easy, then add loads of rich spices and grated carrots.

Because no carrot cake would be quite right without a cream cheese topping, we thin whipped cream cheese to a dolloping consistency with a little milk. The topping is unsweetened, so it makes an excellent foil to sweet, cinnamon-infused maple syrup and a shower of crunchy nuts. It’s a showstopper of a meal that would be perfect for Easter breakfast.

Ingredients for Carrot Cake Pancakes

  • Pancake mix: Pancake mix, which contains flour, leavening and sugar, is a shortcut ingredient that considerably cuts down the time it takes to mix up this carrot cake pancake recipe. Use store-bought or make your own.
  • Spices: A rich combination of spices—ground cinnamon, nutmeg and clove—add a rich, rounded spice flavor aroma to carrot cake pancake batter.
  • Eggs and milk: Beaten eggs and milk add moisture and richness to the pancakes and bind the batter together. Some pancake mixes include these ingredients in a dehydrated and powdered form. Read the instructions; you may be able to add just water.
  • Carrots: Finely shredded carrots are the star ingredient in this recipe. They add moisture, flavor and tenderness to the pancake batter.
  • Maple syrup: Make a quick cinnamon-infused maple syrup to top carrot cake pancakes. You can also use this method with pancake syrup.
  • Cream cheese: Thinning whipped cream cheese with a little milk replicates the tangy and creamy pairing of cream cheese frosting we love on richly spiced carrot cake.
  • Chopped nuts: Chopped walnuts or pecans are a crunchy finishing sprinkle on top of carrot cake pancakes. Get more depth of flavor when you toast the nuts. Learn how here.

Copycat Olive Garden Salad and Dressing

Olive Garden’s famous creamy, zesty dressing and colorful salad have been a fan-favorite for decades. Fortunately for everyone who adores this vibrant crowd-pleasing appetizer, whipping up copycat Olive Garden salad dressing is virtually effortless.

Chock-full of a gorgeous rainbow of vegetables tossed with crunchy lettuce, Parmesan and croutons, it’s one of those side salad recipes we turn to time and again. And that’s before we get to that iconic Olive Garden salad dressing! This is a fantastic last-minute side dish you can throw together in under 20 minutes. Serve it with cozy weeknight Italian fare or cookout classics. You can even double (or triple) the recipe to feed a crowd at your next potluck party.

Copycat Olive Garden Salad Dressing Ingredients

Salad Ingredients

  • Lettuce: Of all the common lettuce varieties, romaine may just be the most juicy and refreshing, and it’s robust enough not to get lost in the other ingredients.
  • Vegetables: Red onions are simply a superior salad onion. They have a pungent bite, and tempered and satisfying crunch that brings so much to a salad. A few ripe plum tomatoes and shredded carrots add a lovely sweetness to the salad, and black olives sprinkle in a little briny saltiness.
  • Parmesan: This is a bold, hard cheese that elevates all your favorite Italian recipes. Sharp, nutty, savory and salty, the funk of Parmesan helps tie all the salad components together.
  • Croutons: Croutons add so much texture to a salad. Use regular or seasoned croutons.
  • Pepperoncini: These tangy pickled peppers have a barely-there spiciness to them—they’re dramatically milder than the likes of jalapenos but pack just as much flavor.

Dressing Ingredients

  • Olive oil: Use good quality extra virgin olive oil as a dressing base. You’ll taste the difference.
  • Vinegar: While white vinegar is the standard for this copycat Olive Garden dressing, apple cider, champagne, balsamic and red wine vinegar are easy alternatives.
  • Mayonnaise: A bit of mayo adds decadence to this dressing, giving it a rich, creamy texture.
  • Mustard: Dijon mustard has a spicy, piquant bite that makes it a favorite for all sorts of recipes— including many homemade salad dressings.
  • Italian dressing mix: This flavor booster is an herb and spice blend featuring a line-up of Mediterranean herbs like parsley, oregano and basil, mixed with celery salt, onion and garlic powder. There’s usually added sugar in there too.
  • Sugar: A 1/2 teaspoon of sugar gives this dressing the perfect hint of sweetness to complement the savory, tangy elements in the salad.
  • Seasonings: Salt and fresh cracked black pepper are a welcome addition to any salad, but a little garlic powder takes things to the next level.
